Issue 7 – Take Off

It seems fitting that we are returning to Berlin for the Europlanet Science Congress (EPSC) in 2024. The first EPSC, held in the city in 2006, was the most important legacy of the European Planetology Network (EuroPlaNet), the first project funded by the European Commission (EC) to consolidate the European planetary science community. At the end of our final EC grant, the Europlanet 2024 Research Infrastructure (RI), there will be many presentations on the results and the outcomes of the project shared with the community at EPSC2024.

This issue showcases the outcomes of two Europlanet 2024 RI Transnational Access field
trips (Field Notes from a Planetary Expedition and Little Venus in the Middle of the Atlantic) and tells the story of two of our Virtual Access programmes, the SPIDER planetary space weather services and GMAP geological mapping infrastructure. Features on the Europlanet Telescope Network, engaging with embassies and global collaboration workshops show the range of networking activities carried out within the project.

Our Planetary Perspectives interview highlights opportunities within space industry for early careers. We also investigate AR vs VR for outreach, take a sensory tour of the Solar System and find out what a comet smells like! The Last Word column this month is co-authored by the Europlanet Society President, Ann Carine Vandaele, and Europlanet 2024 RI Coordinator, Nigel Mason, who share their vision for what comes next for Europlanet, beyond 2024.
