The European Planetary Science Congress (EPSC) 2010 will take place at the Angelicum Centre – Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Rome, Italy, from Sunday 19 September to Friday 24 September 2010.
The EPSC is the major European meeting on planetary science and attracts scientists from Europe and around the World. The 2010 programme will cover a wide range of planetary topics, including new results from Mars, impact processes in the Solar System, chemical evolution and early planetary life, probing the atmospheres of extrasolar worlds, comparative planetology beyond the Solar System, exploring Martian moons and the Rosetta flybys of asteroids 2867 Steins and 21 Lutetia. More than 900 abstracts for oral presentations and posters have been submitted.

The EPSC has a distinctively interactive style, with a mix of talks, workshops and posters, intended to provide a stimulating environment for discussion.
A full schedule of EPSC 2010 scientific sessions and events will be released by the end of July. Further information will be circulated a few weeks before the meeting, including press notices on presentations that may be of special interest (subject to embargo).
EPSC 2010 is organised by Europlanet, a Research Infrastructure funded under the European Commission’s Framework 7 Programme, in association with the European Geosciences Union, with the support of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) and the INAF Institute of Physics of Interplanetary Space (IFSI) in Rome.
EPSC also promotes dissemination of Planetary Science through a chain of events for general public: INAF is organising three public conferences in the cloister of San Pietro in Vincoli, the historical building of Engineering Faculty of the I° University of Rome, “La Sapienza”.
INAF is also arranging an open air exhibition to be located beside the historical and artistic monuments of Rome.
On the evening of September 18th, to celebrate the beginning of EPSC 2010, a Moon Watch Party will take place in the historical centre of Rome. The event, promoted by NASA, will be organised in Italy by INAF with the support of Italian Union of Amateurs Astronomers (UAI).
MEDIA REGISTRATION
Media representatives are cordially invited to attend. Press room facilities will be available for the duration of the conference – from 9 am on Monday 20 September through to 3 pm on Friday 24 September. The venue has a wireless network. Media registration is free. Any bona fide media delegates can pre-register online or by e-mailing media.centre@europlanet-eu.org. (Advance registration is not essential but encouraged).

INAF
The Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) is the principal the co- organizer of EPSC 2010. INAF is the main Italian Research Institute for the study of the Universe which promotes, implements and coordinates research in these fields both nationally and internationally. INAF is present throughout Italy with 19 research facilities; one of these is the Institute for Interplanetary Space Physics (IFSI) which is located in Rome. IFSI is the main department involved in the event.

Il Congresso Europeo di Scienze Planetarie (EPSC) 2010 avrà luogo al Centro Angelicum, sede della Pontificia Università degli Studi San Tommaso d’Aquino, Roma, Italia, da sabato 19 Settembre a venerdì 24 Settembre 2010.
L’EPSC è il principale meeting europeo riguardante le scienze planetarie e riunisce scienziati da tutto il mondo. Il programma del 2010 copre un’ampia gamma di argomenti scientifici che includono i nuovi risultati sul pianeta Marte, i processi d’impatto nel Sistema Solare, l’evoluzione chimica e le prime fasi della formazione planetaria, lo studio delle atmosfere dei pianeti extrasolari, la planetologia comparativa oltre il Sistema Solare, l’esplorazione delle lune di Marte e i recenti flyby della sonda Rosetta agli asteroidi 2867 Steins e 21 Lutetia.
Per l’EPSC 2010 sono stati presentati più di 900 interventi, tra abstracts, conferenze e posters.

L’EPSC è un evento dallo stile vivo e interattivo, dove un mix di conferenze, workshops, posters ed eventi per il pubblico creano un ambiente stimolante per il confronto e la discussione scientifica. Un programma dettagliato del congresso e degli eventi per il pubblico verrà diffuso entro la fine di Luglio. Qualche settimana prima dell’evento verranno diffuse ulteriori informazioni e pubblicati dei comunicati stampa sugli argomenti scientifici di maggiore interesse (soggetti ad embargo).
L’EPSC 2010 è organizzato da Europlanet, una Infrastruttura di Ricerca finanziata dal Settimo Programma Quadro della Commissione Europea, in associazione con l’EGU, l’Unione Europea di Scienze Geologiche, e con il supporto dell’INAF, l’Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, e dell’IFSI-INAF, l’Istituto di Fisica dello Spazio Interplanetario di Roma.
L’EPSC promuove la conoscenza delle scienze planetarie attraverso una serie di eventi organizzati a Roma dall’INAF.
Tra questi, 3 conferenze per il pubblico sui temi più avvincenti delle scienze planetarie, organizzate nel Chiostro di San Pietro in Vincoli, la storica Sede della Facoltà di Ingegneria dell’Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza”.
L’INAF realizzerà inoltre una mostra diffusa sul Sistema Solare nei principali luoghi di interesse storico e artistico della capitale.
Infine, la notte del 18 Settembre, per celebrare l’apertura dell’EPSC, nel centro storico di Roma verrà organizzato un Moon Watch Party, una serata di osservazione della Luna. Questo evento, promosso dalla NASA, verrà realizzato in Italia dall’ INAF con il supporto della UAI, l’Unione Italiana Astrofili.

L’INAF, l’Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica è il principale co-organizzatore dell’EPSC 2010. L’INAF è l’ente principale per lo studio dell’Universo che promuove, implementa e coordina la ricerca in questo settore, sia a livello nazionale che internazionale. L’INAF è presente in Italia con 19 strutture di ricerca, tra cui l’IFSI, l’Istituto di Fisica dello Spazio Interplanetario di Roma, l’Istituto dell’INAF maggiormente coinvolto nell’evento.
